Information Seeking and Use in Diverse Organization Contexts

Dr. Brian Detlor, McMaster University, Canada
Dr Chun Wei Choo, University of Toronto, Canada
Dr. Maureen McKenzie, Dowling College,
Dr. Don Turnbull, consultant

Brian Detlor provided an overview of the established research about information seeking and use:
-          Male vs. female is not a predictor of difference, but a self-orientation vs. other-orientation IS.  This is often conflated with male vs. female.
-          The type of task makes a big difference in information seeking behavior.
o   browsing vs. search
o   recurring vs. ad hoc information need
o   good-enough vs. best information
-          He is beginning a study investigating the combined effects of individual differences and tasks.

Dr. Choo presented a model of information culture in organizations, which he has evaluated in a law organization, a health organization, and an engineering organization.
